PSHE at Bunwell Primary School

PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education) is an important subject in primary school as it helps our children to develop the qualities and attributes they need to thrive as individuals, friends, family members and members of society. It teaches the skills necessary to navigate the wider world and stay safe.

At Bunwell, PSHE has always been an integral part of our curriculum, but since September 2020, we have been using a particular scheme to deliver it. Jigsaw is a whole-school approach and, in their own words, ‘embodies a positive philosophy and creative teaching and learning activities to nurture children’s development as compassionate and well-rounded human beings.’

The scheme is built around six puzzles, which are taught one per half term, in one lesson a week. All the lessons are age-appropriate and meet the needs of the children at their particular stage of development.
The units are:

Being Me in My World
Celebrating Difference
Dreams and Goals
Healthy Me
Relationships and
Changing Me (In some year groups, this unit includes learning about life cycles and human reproduction)

If you would like to find out more about Jigsaw’s approach to PSHE, please look at the document: ‘Jigsaw – Leaflet for Parents and Carers’ which you can download below.

Relationships Education

From September 2020, the Health Education and Relationships Education aspects of PSHE became compulsory in primary schools. The Sex Education aspect of PSHE is not compulsory and parents still have the right to withdraw their children from these specific lessons. Most of the Sex Education part of our curriculum comprises very few lessons, all of which take place in KS2. The lessons are sensitively delivered by experienced teachers and, at Bunwell, we believe these are a vital part of preparing children for high school and the wider world. We follow the Jigsaw scheme of work to deliver our Sex Education lessons – further details can be found in the attached leaflet: ‘RSHE: A Guide for Parents and Carers.’

Please do not hesitate to ask if you have any questions that are not answered in the leaflet.
